Trade war and protectionism

Free trade is the opposite of protectionism - it means as few tariffs as possible, giving people the freedom to buy cheaper or better-made products from anywhere in the world. A trade war is when a nation imposes tariffs or quotas on imports and foreign countries retaliate with similar forms of trade protectionism. As it escalates, a trade war reduces international trade. A trade war starts when a nation attempts to protect its domestic industry and create jobs. According to former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan said that the ongoing trade war is a “lose-lose situation” for the warring parties. Protectionism has led to uncertainty in regional groupings and international agreements owing to exit of major players for example Brexit and US exiting TPP & Paris Climate deal.
